Gambrel (n.) meaning ‘hipped roof’, c.1850s, short for gambrel roof c.1760s, so called for its shape, from gambrel meaning the hind leg or a horse or hock c.1600. Earlier definition: a bar to hang carcasses c.1540s. Perhaps comes from Old Northern French gamberel, from gambe ‘leg’, from Medieval Latin gamba.
This exhibition explored the transmutation of meaning through a series of ceramic sculptures. Words and objects become buried in layers of conversation or dirt, origins are lost, attributed incorrectly. Gambrel explores ideas of burial and excavation, what happens when a myriad of sources are dug up, mixed up and churned out again.
There is a recurring theme of multiples and doubles throughout the show, but nothing is identical, each item carries its own uniqueness. Alluding to how an interpretation of the same subject is recast over time. The works in this show look to confuse a timeline, at once inhabiting a contemporary space while resembling familiar tropes from the past.
Ceramic has the ability to survive for thousands of years underground, but eventually all of the objects here will become fragments for reuse and reinterpretation.
