This exhibition explored the transmutation of meaning through a series of ceramic sculptures. Words and objects become buried in layers of conversation or dirt, origins are lost, attributed incorrectly. Gambrel explores ideas of burial and excavation, what happens when a myriad of sources are dug up, mixed up and churned out again.

'Man In A Dress' was the debut solo show from non-binary transfeminine artist Fantod. This was an autobiographical exhibition exploring the realities and vulnerabilities of being trans in the UK during a relentless moral panic through the personal lens of Fantod’s own transition. The exhibition includes both recent work and a selection of pieces from the time they were closeted.

This collaborative group show with Nadja Andersson, Shirley Lachaise, and Robyn Boyle presented important conversations surrounding grief, trauma, anger and adversity through textiles, painting and drawing. The artists found art and making to be their most intuitive outlet to explore these human experiences, and the exhibition will be the result of learning from each other and investigating their own unique artistic views on healing.

Jeff’s solo exhibition stemed from an on-going experimental process, which involves the creation of alternative landscapes by exposing large format film negatives to natural elements, analogous to the classical elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The photography within the show created landscapes in some and cosmic beginnings and endings in others.

ROOTS was an exhibition exploring the theme of ‘forests’ through drawings, paintings, prints and performance by Sasha Ballon, Anuschka Barlas, Alexandra Beteeva, Mira Knoche and Poppy Pearce. In the wake of the first pandemic lockdown, they moved away from Glasgow but maintained a strong collaborative focus based on a shared context of fostering a close connection to nature and to the different landscapes encountered by us in Canada, Russia and the UK. Now back in Scotland, this exhibition allowed them to continue the dialogue sustained throughout the pandemic, and turn online conversations and ideas into a real life show.

'Not an Art Class: Art for wellbeing & mindfulness' was a workshop led by ARTernative which allowed participants to explore creativity without pressure. The workshop involved an initial short meditation to help you settle into the space, a creative challenge aimed at exploring your inner creativity (i.e. bilateral drawing, blindfolded etc.), an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned during the session and delicious home-made refreshments!

This collaborative exhibition by members Tess Glen & Andrea Christodoulides presented drawings, paintings and works on fabric which were vibrant and colourful, conveying a mysterious atmosphere that invites the viewer to interpret multilayered and open-ended narratives. The artists utilise rich imagination and storytelling by creating works that follow the cracks of the real, which are approximated and folded onto surfaces that connect the inside and the outside and give texture to anxieties over the current contradictions in society.

In November SaltSpace presented a free beginners animation workshop in response to the 'Climate Challenge: 1.5 Degrees Films' initiative facilitated by Jan Graham. The initiative invites people to make 90-second films to share their thoughts and ideas about climate change and how it is affecting us as individuals, our surroundings, families and communities.

Film Screening: 'I c' and Q&A with director Helene Moltke-Leth

The debut screening of 'I c', featured an introduction by producer Marie Schmidt Olesen and a Q&A via zoom with director Helene Moltke-Leth. Helene is an artist, DJ and international award winning short film director. She has received eight international awards for her films, which have been screened at over forty film-, art-, and poetry festivals around the world.

Anthropocene Architecture School is an internationally recognised architectural education platform which creates educational spaces to respond to the Climate Emergency. Founder Scott, is a Glaswegian climate justice activist, architectural designer, climate literacy educator. Scott’s talk will explore 2021’s Doors Open Day theme of Sustainable Cities, grounding our built environments in our context of a Climate and Ecological Emergency.

In September 2021 we launched our SaltSpace members shop as part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival! The shop sits in our Makers Space which are also our artist studios, in the historic Saltmarket St. of Glasgow and features work by our members from an eclectic mix of zines, prints, drawings, paintings, stickers, comics, jewellery, photography and apparel from emerging artists based across Scotland.
